4 Eco-friendly ways to decorate your house this Diwali
2020 has been a rollercoaster, to say the least and we couldn’t be more excited about getting our festive outfits on for once. We went through a lot this year and we deserve a little celebration. However, we are well aware of the air pollution concerns that Diwali brings every year. And with the entire world fighting for its life and trying to build a better immunity, it’s only fair if we pledge to celebrate a green Diwali this year.
So, if you’ve been looking to go eco-friendly this Diwali, but struggling with décor ideas, we have you covered. Here are some fantastic DIY decoration ideas that you can enjoy with your family all while making your house look beautiful. Let’s gather some good Diwali karma, shall we?
Orange lamps
Candles are what make Diwali what it’s known to be – the festival of lights. Unfortunately, candles have also been the biggest source of air pollution during Diwali due to the kind of wax that’s used in them. Candles made of paraffin wax aren’t even biodegradable. So it’s understandable if you don’t want to pollute your surroundings in the name of the festival you love the most.
A more wise and creative way to light candles is to use orange peels. You start cutting the orange into half, scooping the fruit out, and cleaning the insides of the peels. Now, simply add some oil and a wick to each peel cup, and voila! You’ve got yourself a scented orange lamp.
Newspaper wall decor
Those living room walls looking too bare for this extravagant festival? Well, the good news is that you can easily decorate your walls using some newspapers, a few glue sticks, and a tad bit of creativity. Newspapers are easily available are usually lying around in abundance in most households. And the best part is that they are a recyclable resource, so there you go.
To revive your walls, find a design of your liking, and collect the required materials – cardboards, glue, water paints, and newspapers. Cut the cardboard according to the selected design, roll the stack of newspapers like pen and paste on the cardboard sheet. Once the cardboard is fully covered, start painting it. And before you know it, you have a handmade décor item that can now go up on your walls for good.
Old glass lanterns
Got some old beer bottles and mason jars stored in the attic that you don’t know what to do with? If yes, then you’re in luck because these old little glass tumblers are going to make you popular around the block this Diwali.
Start by bringing out your glass bottles and jars and cleaning them thoroughly. You can place string lights or your homemade candles in them to make DIY lamps. To add a creative tinge to your lamps, cover them with lacey cloth cuttings or stick little flower petals on the mouth of the bottles. You can also paint the bottles different colors and keep them in your backyard or decorate your balcony with them. Better still, line your driveway with these lamps and get ready for a tsunami of compliments.
Plants and more plants
There’s no way we can leave out plants while speaking of a green Diwali. Why not bring some new life into your house this festive season that you can cherish for a long time? Indoor plants make for surprisingly amazing décor pieces if placed in the right corners.
Having a spacious house gives you many choices in this matter, but if you have a small apartment, you can go for indoor vine plants like money plant, Rangoon creeper, Star Jasmine, etc. that don’t take up much ground space. You can also hang pots in your balcony or at the ends of the curtain rods in your living room to give your space a chic appearance. Plants will not only make your home look elegant, but also add a fresh scent to the ambience.
Doesn’t it feel wonderful to celebrate your favorite festival in harmony with mother nature? Whether you have been celebrating Diwali responsibly for years or this is your first time doing some eco-friendly DIYs, know that your intentions are in the right place. Skipping the endless shopping sprees also gives you more quality time with your family and friends. So, it’s an absolute win-win.
